Join the Disability Outreach Center (DOC) for a two-part event: Glam Up Your Accessibility Aids where we'll have supplies for decorating your accessory aids, from mobility devices to mask chains, and a Campus Accessibility Tour where we'll tour the accessible paths of travel around campus and show you how to get to your classes!

Glam Up Your Accessibility Aids will be in Viking Union (VU) 565 from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM. We'll have lunch available at 12:00 noon. At 1:00 PM, we'll provide an optional accessible tour of The Centers, including the Disability Access and Outreach Centers in Wilson Library, LGBTQ+ Western on the 7th floor of Viking Union, and Multicultural Student Services on the 5th and 7th floors of Viking Union. If you'd just like to join us for the Campus Accessibility Tour, meet in VU 735 at 1:45 PM. We will leave for the Campus Accessibility Tour at 2:00 PM.
 


DisOrientation
DisOrientation is the Disability Access Center (DAC) and Disability Outreach Center (DOC)’s Western Welcome programming. Join us for a week-long welcome (back) to Western for all students, including new first year, transfer, and graduate students as well as returning students. Join us to build community and connections, learn about how to access and navigate university services and resources at Western including the DAC and DOC, and have fun!

Accessibility:

  • AA/EO. Accessibility Statement: This event is intended for all participants, including those with visible or non-apparent disabilities. For disability accommodation(s) (such as ASL interpretation or TypeWell transcription) please contact disability.outreach@wwu.edu. Advance notice is appreciated and sometimes necessary to arrange for some accessibility needs.
  • Location: Multicultural Center Multi-Use Room (VU 735) is in the Viking Union.
  • Building Access: Viking Union is an ADA accessible building. Button-activated entrances are located on the southeast side and northwest side of the building near Garden Street. Elevators provide access to all levels.
  • Seating: VU 735 typically has standard height chairs with fixed arm rests. We will have some rolling chairs with arm rests and greater lumbar support available, if you would like to ensure one is reserved for you, please email disability.outreach@wwu.edu. Seating information is accurate to the best of our ability but subject to change.
  • Bathrooms: ADA accessible and all-gender bathrooms are located on the 3rd floor (VU 351 and 353 are ADA accessible and all-gender) and the 7th floor (VU 714 and 717 are ADA accessible and all-gender and VU 715 and 716 are all-gender but not ADA accessible).
  • Low-Sensory Space: There is a quiet Meditation Room on the 7th floor of the VU that you can use as a low-sensory space and/or for meditation or prayer purposes.
  • COVID and Contagious Illness Precautions: Masks, Air Purifier, Testing, and Illness:
    • Masks: Masks are strongly encouraged at this event. KN95 masks are available at the door and upon request. Masking makes in-person gatherings accessible for many, especially those in our immunocompromised and immunodeficient communities. Help protect our community by wearing a mask. However, we know that masking is inaccessible for some in our community.
    • Air Purifiers: This event will have an air purifier that has four-stage hospital-type filtration with a true HEPA filter.
    • Testing: Attendees are encouraged to test for COVID prior to coming to the event, if possible. We will have a limited number of rapid COVID tests available upon request.
    • Illness Policy: If you are experiencing any symptoms of contagious illness such as cough, sore throat, fever, or nausea, we encourage you to please stay home and join us at another time as our community includes members who are immunocompromised or have immunodeficiencies.
  • Fragrance-Free: Please refrain from wearing scented products such as perfume, cologne, and fragrant personal care products while at training as they can trigger serious health issues for those with fragrance allergies and/or chemical sensitivities.
