Reclaiming Therapeutic Craft from the Institutional Gaze
Description
Craft has often been used as a tool of care but also of discipline and control. This work-in-progress talk explores how making became therapeutic in American medical institutions at the turn of the 20th century, and what it means to reclaim craft outside those settings today.
Following a short presentation and discussion, participants are invited to stay for a craft-along. Bring a project you’re already working on, try rigid heddle weaving, or explore fidget-craft stations. All skill levels are welcome. Participation is not required. Come listen, make, and think together about history, craft, care, and community.
This will be a hybrid Zoom event. You are welcome to craft along with us from home.
